SINTEF Energy Research develops efficient and environmentally safe technology based on the natural working fluid CO2.
It specializes on three areas:
- Component design and testing
- System design, simulation and testing
- Concept development for new application areas of CO2 technology
More specifically, it offers the following services related to CO2 technology:
- Development of CO2 systems & components for refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump systems
- Testing & optimization of CO2 components: i.e. compact heat exchangers, compressors, ejectors and expanders
- Theoretical and experimental studies on the different application fields of CO2 as a refrigerant
- Documentation of results through publications, patent applications and product development
- Measurement of thermophysical properties of materials, heat transfer and pressure drop and flow phenomena, i.e maldistribution of two-phase flow in manifolds of compact heat exchangers
- Advanced simulation and optimization tools, as well as test units for various components and applications
- Verification of modelling and simulation results in some of the world's largest facilities within the field of refrigeration engineering: 7000 m2 of modern laboratories for research, development, and education
SINTEF Energy Research offers research-based solutions and services in order to stimulate development in industry and the public sector, as well as to provide the basis for software solutions.

| About SINTEF |
 |
SINTEF - the Foundation for Scientific and Industrial Research at the Norwegian Institute of Technology - is the largest independent research organisation in Scandinavia. Every year, SINTEF supports around 2000 Norwegian and overseas companies to generate customer-focused solutions.
SINTEF's head office and main facilities are based in Norway with additional offices and laboratories being located in the USA, the Republic of Macedonia, Poland, and Denmark.
In 2005, refrigeration scientists at SINTEF's Gemini center within Applied Refrigeration Technology were honoured with an award from the International Energy Agency (IEA) for their work on developing CO2 technology, i.e. within the application areas vehicle cooling systems, commercial refrigeration, and heat pumps.
