The Institute for Thermodynamics (IfT) offers engineering services for thermal systems with a special focus on mobile air conditioning working with the natural refrigerant CO2.
Services related to R744 technologies:
- Theoretical and experimental analysis of high-pressure CO2 systems
- Design & optimization of CO2 systems and components
- Application of CO2 in vehicle and residential heat pump applications
- Studies on the different application fields of CO2 as a refrigerant
The IfT disposes of the following facilities and systems::
- Test rig for CO2 cycles and components:
- Compressors: measurement of efficiencies and indicator diagrams
- Accumulators: measurement of efficiencies, visualization using a glass accumulator
- Expansion devices: component analysis
- Environmental test chamber for cycle analysis
- Simulation tools:
- Object-oriented simulation platform for complex steady state and transient models of air conditioning, heat pump, and refrigeration systems
- Coupling of different systems inside the simulation environment: indoor modeling, multi-stage systems, water chillers
- Model library for components: e.g. accumulators, heat exchangers, compressors or expansion devices
- Graphic user interface for system definition and result demonstration based on QT libraries
- Models based on C++ or Modelica
The institute has expertise in developing user specific software applications based on object-oriented methods using C++ libraries for thermophysical data of solids and fluids, heat transfer and pressure drop correlations. It cooperates with universities and industry associations worldwide. Most of its research projects are conducted in collaboration with industry partners.
