The automotive manufacturing and supply industry are major contributors to economic growth, but also to increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Transport is the largest contributing end-use sector to total emissions, accounting for one third of national energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in 2005.

In Canada more than 80% of private households have a personal vehicle with a total of 18.1 million passenger cars registered in 2005. The transport sector accounts for 25% of all national greenhouse gas emissions. The Canadian government is increasing its efforts to introduce mandatory legislation for fuel efficiency standards and the reduction of greenhouse gases.
