The United States of America is among the world's largest automobile manufacturer. The automotive manufacturing and supply industry are major contributors to economic growth, but also to increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Transport is the largest contributing end-use sector to total emissions, accounting for one third of national energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in 2005. |

In Canada more than 80% of private households have a personal vehicle with a total of 18.1 million passenger cars registered in 2005. The transport sector accounts for 25% of all national greenhouse gas emissions. The Canadian government is increasing its efforts to introduce mandatory legislation for fuel efficiency standards and the reduction of greenhouse gases.
