SIERRA units have been designed for a widespread use throughout all European countries, especially those where CO₂ refrigeration has not yet been introduced due to climatic conditions. So far refrigeration systems with CO₂ as a refrigerant were used mostly in northern countries. The largest potential market, however, is in central and Southern Europe.

In these countries, market requires some additional characteristics which are not present in the products available today:

• The system must be simple, with high availability components
• Energy consumption must be as low as possible also during hot summers, with a further constraint that evaporative cooling of condensers is often not possible due to shortage of water
• Overall cost of a CO₂ system, including energy consumption, installation and service, must be optimised to make the Life Cycle Cost attractive.

The new Sierra family has been designed considering all that.

Two options are available for efficiency improvement.

The first one consists on a new design concept that will be officially presented during next Chillventa Exhibition in October. It improves efficiency all year round with a potential of energy saving from 10-15%.

A further option available is the ECONOMIZER. Based on some field tests ran for one year it has been proven that with a proper design the economizer can save, in a air cooled refrigeration system, a significant amount of energy at warmer ambient conditions. As an example with outside air at 35°C it is possible to save on a chiller system more than 15% of energy compared with standard CO₂ systems.

Moreover in the design of SIERRA some significant secondary losses usually not considered, for example the bypass of hot gas in the oil separation process, have been eliminated.
