Under its product brand Sabroe, Johnson Controls has developed a freeze package optimized for industrial cascade systems and a high-pressure reciprocating compressor, to be used also in heat pump applications.
CO2/Ammonia Freeze Package (CAFP)
The freeze package concept is based on a cascade system combining the advantages of CO2 on the low-temperature side and ammonia on the high-temperature side. The package, while being more compact than traditional solutions, has a very small ammonia charge, making it possible to install large-capacity, low-temperature plants with only limited refrigerant restrictions. Moreover, the clear separation of ammonia and CO2 eliminates the risk of damage in production in case of leaks. Together with an automatic oil recovery system in both CO2 and ammonia circuit, the Freeze Package significantly reduces maintenance costs. Overall, it uses up to 5-15% less power than conventional two-stage systems, and even 45% less compared to single-stage systems.

HPO/HPC high-pressure reciprocating compressors
Being installed on the low-temperature side of CO2-ammonia plants, Johnson Controls´ Sabroe compressors work efficiently with evaporating temperatures as low as -55°C. This unique high-pressure compressor design, which can also be used in ammonia heat pump applications to produce hot water at up to 70°C, features an automatic capacity control and a high Coefficient of Performance (COP). Their excellent accessibility and few requirements for spare parts ensure an easy maintenance on the customer’s own premises, thereby reducing downtime, servicing and repair costs. All six models feature lightweight pistons, chromium piston rings, gas-dampened discharge valves and hardened cylinder surfaces aluminium. To prevent excessive pressure, they are equipped with spring-loaded safety heads, balanced refrigerant-tight shaft seals, and an internal bypass valve.
