CO2 Heat Pumps - from Japan to the world |

This year’s HVAC&R Japan trade show featured a variety of new CO2 hot water heat pump models and compressors. An accompanying Seminar on Natural Refrigerants provided a global view on developments in Europe, Korea, and Japan.

At Japan’s biggest trade show for the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) industry, Japanese and foreign companies showcased several systems and components optimized for the natural refrigerant CO2 (R744). Among the suppliers featuring CO2 Technology at their booths were Sanyo, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Denso, Fujikoki, Matsushita, Mayekawa, Sanden, Bitzer, and Embraco.
Heat Pumps
- Sanyo: The manufacturer of heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration technologies this year highlighted its environmental commitment by showcasing its latest “EcoCute” model operating with R744. Sanyo also presented its innovative light commercial refrigeration system, a CFC-free inverter showcase using CO2 (photo gallery).

- Mycom Mayekawa: The Japanese manufacturer put a special emphasis on refrigeration equipment using the so-called “Natural Five” refrigerants: carbon dioxide, hydrocarbon, ammonia, water, and air. As examples of its advanced technological solutions for carbon dioxide, Mayekawa showcased its water heat-source type heat pump, and its air heat-source type hot water supply unit. Its “NewTon 3000” chilling unit for industrial use operates with NH3 and CO2.

- Daikin: Its new exhibited EcoCute model achieves a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 5.1 through the integration of a new compressor, its “Thermal Hot” insulation system, and a more efficient system to discharge water. More specifically, Daikin has changed the insulation material from grasswool to foamed polystyrene, and incorporated a twisted tube heat exchanger. Its new discharging system leads to a reduction of heat energy (photo gallery)
- Sanden: The company presented it recently launched slim type Eco-Cute model, which is the first to use vacuum insulation material, and a newly squared model to use a visible remote control panel with energy-saving function. The company also confirmed that it will present a new model in July 2008. (photo gallery)
- National (Panasonic): The biggest booth at this year’s HVAC&R Japan was also dominated by CO2 Technology. National has succeeded in downsizing the tank of its CO2 hot water heater by using a new vacuum insulator, and using a twisted tube at the heat exchanger (photo gallery).
Compressors & Other components
Besides system manufacturers, component suppliers from all around the world showcased their technological solutions for CO2 at the HVAC&R Japan. The German manufacturer Bitzer presented its new semi-hermetic compressor suitable for sub- and transcritical CO2 applications. The Brazilian compressor manufacturer Embraco exhibited a single-stage displacement compressor for CO2 ranging from 1cc to 3 cc, as well as heat pump compressors. Also, a hand-held CO2 leak detector was presented by Inficon.
