Public and professionals in the building and residential sectors discovered new trends and innovations at the Interclima home+elec exhibition in Paris, from 5 to 8 February. The event focused on renewable energy, efficiency as well as comfort and communication, with a special emphasis on heating and cooling solutions.
Among the different products and solutions, Heat Pumps were at the core of exhibits. Several companies presented new models in different types: reversible (mostly air/ air), ground source, etc. Together with the exhibitions, a programme of conferences gave an overview of the state of legislation in France relevant to manufacturers and distributors, as well as the biggest technical challenges faced by the sector.
CO2 Heat Pumps by Sanyo & Daikin

Building up on the present model of CO2 heat pump in Europe, Sanyo presented a new model with a higher capacity, reaching 9kW. All key components have been developed directly by Sanyo, including a performing two-stage rotary compressor. The heat pump will also be capable of heating up water at external ambient temperatures down to -25° Celsius, while operating silently. Sanyo’s new product could be launched in the European market by the end of the year.
On the other hand, Daikin presented a prototype for a CO2 heat pump adapted to European conditions, building up on the know-how the company acquired by developing EcoCute Heat Pumps in Japan. Presented as "Tomorrow’s Heat Pump", Daikin's new product aims to serve for space and water heating, thus providing an integral residential solution to replace current systems. The new model would be capable of heating water up to 85°C. Daikin expects its new Heat Pump to enter the European market by late 2009 or 2010.

Refrigeration & A/C solutions
Amongst the showcase of refrigeration technology, several stands featured developments based on the natural refrigerant CO2. The Finnish company Vahterus, for instance, showcased a prototype of its cascade Ammonia/ CO2 system for refrigeration applications. As a specialist in fully welded Heat Exchangers, Vahterus showed how its Plate & Shell solution can be optimized for different uses, from flooded or direct expansion evaporators to cascade or condensers.
Similarly, compressor manufacturer Bitzer also offered information about its range of semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors for CO2 applications. Although not at display in the show, the company explained how its compressors can serve a large range of commercial refrigeration applications, as it has shown in the several dozens of supermarkets in France alone already running on CO2 as a working fluid.
Background
The "interclima+elec" this year took place from 5 to 8 February in Paris. Technical solutions presented focused particularly in improving the energy efficiency in the French market. The building sector represents 46% of the France's total energy consumption, and 25% of its greenhouse gas emissions. By 2050, the target is to reduce 4-fold the energy consumption by the building sector
