REWE is currently preparing for the test of CO2 (R744) refrigeration systems in three supermarkets with further installations planned after the concept has been proven. In its latest press release, the company mentions R744 refrigeration as a key technology meeting new demanding environmental building and furnishing standards. More specifically, the CO2 freezer compartments will be part of its "Small Surface Concept" that foresees the accelerated expansion of small supermarkets in major German cities as from 2008 on. REWE opted for R744 as a reaction to growing environmental and health concerns expressed by its consumers.

Andreas Krämer, Deputy Press Officer for the REWE Group, confirmed to R744.com that the retail group will partner with the component supplier Teko, the engineering company K.E.D., and the cabinet manufacturer KMW to install the next R744 refrigeration systems. The adoption of CO2 Technology would be the "next step in the direction of ecology". REWE now plans to further increase the energy efficiency of its supermarkets through heat pump technology combining heating, air conditioning, and industrial refrigeration functions. Krämer did not, however, provide details on the systems' technical specifications.
