Studies on R744 top Natural Refrigeration Award |

The first prize was given to a work demonstrating efficiency gains of 20% for transcritical R744 refrigeration cycles. The other prizes also went to young scientists addressing technical issues of R744 refrigeration.

Jörg Nickl from the Technical University Dresden received the "Natural Refrigeration Award 2007" for his doctoral thesis on the "Development of an expander/compressor for the transcritical refrigeration process with carbon dioxide as refrigerant". He demonstrated a 20% improvement in the Coefficient of Performance (COP) by replacing the throttle valve with a low-frequency, three-stage expander directly connected to the compressor. Nickel proved the increased efficiency of this novel design in practical trials.

The young scientist obtained the 1st place in a global competition of students for the best work on sustainable refrigeration and air-conditioning solutions. The 2nd and 3rd place were awarded to papers on the "Energetic evaluation of different R744 loop concepts" and the "Experimental investigations of an ammonia/carbon dioxide cascade system for supermarket refrigeration”, respectively. On 15 November, the three winners from Germany and Sweden received a prize money totaling 5,000 euros to encourage further research into natural refrigerants.

Background
The "Natural Refrigeration Award", created in 2005, was this year co-sponsored by Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology and the trade publication ScanRef. An international panel of judges from science, business and the media selected the winners in autumn 2007. The key organizer, eurammon, is a joint European initiative of companies, institutions and individuals promoting the use of natural refrigerants and encouraging information sharing among experts, politicians and the public.
