The event, hosted by the Natural Refrigerants Transition Board (NRTB), will focus on CO2 only systems for supermarkets, industrial CO2/Ammonia cascade systems, as well as water and energy saving transcritical heat pumps. Engineers, contractors, equipment suppliers, and consultants from all around the world will attend the event on 14 November.
The NRTB decided to organize this event to draw attention to the revival of the natural refrigerant carbon dioxide, which is currently making inroads in Australia's refrigeration industry. To demonstrate its high efficiency even in hot climates, the seminar will include a site visit to Drakes Supermarket, Australia's first supermarket using a CO2 only system. The operating transcritical system is among the most advanced developments in supermarket refrigeration.
Seminar Agenda
The seminar starts off with a morning visit to the new store using the CO2 only system. Sergio Girotto from the Italian engineering services company ENEX will lead the visit, as ENEX provided the design services and the compressor units together with their Australian partner ECO2.
|
The afternoon sessions will be opened by a keynote on "New compressor solutions for the refrigerant CO2", in which Dr. Harald Kaiser, from Bock Compressors, will provide an outline of the latest developments in transcritical compressors. Being among the first manufacturers to embrace CO2 Technology, Bock has been an industry leader in this field ever since.
Other presentations will focus on commercial case design, industrial CO2 installations, gas cooler technology, or commercial air-conditioning.

Reactions
"The use of this CO2 only system at the new Foodlands Store in Angle Vale is the kind of leadership the industry needs. We think this is the beginning of a significant trend because CO2 based refrigeration is far better for the environment," says seminar host Dr. Michael Bellstedt, Executive President of the NRTB.
"We believe it is more economical and better for the environment to use natural refrigerants – technology that is proven and broadly used in Europe," he adds.
Background & Next steps
The Natural Refrigerants Transition Board was established in 2003 to encourage the adoption of natural refrigerant solutions to the problem of rapidly growing HFC emissions. In February 2007, the NRTB received a grant of AUD$2 million from the Australian Government to assist the supermarket industry in the trial and evaluation systems using natural refrigerants, and to encourage the development of training materials and courses.
The upcoming workshop is the 2nd this year to explore natural refrigerants in supermarkets. R744.com will keep you updated on the outcomes of the event.
