UK Cooling Awards for CO2 refrigeration & A/C |

This year, the UK awards for environmentally safe refrigeration and air conditioning were given to several projects involving the natural refrigerant CO2 (R744). Among the winners: Marks & Spencer, Star Refrigeration, and the Co-operative Group.

The UK retail and cooling industry has awarded Marks & Spencer, Star Refrigeration, and the Co-operative Group for their commitment to sustainable refrigeration using natural refrigerants, such as CO2 (R744).
Projects involving CO2 Technology in industrial and commercial refrigeration, air conditioning, or desk cooling had been nominated in 9 out of 12 categories. Nominees included Tesco, Johnson Controls, the Danish Technological Institute (DTI) and Epta, among others. Both TROX and Space Engineering were nominated twice for their innovative CO2 projects, the former for its CO2 desk cooler, the latter for its transcritical R744 systems for convenience stores.

Marks & Spencer: The leading retailer celebrated four awards for its "Environmental marketing campaign", as "Green end-user of the Year – Large Projects", and as "Environmental Pioneer – Individual". The "Installation of the Year: Retail” was awarded to M&S for its Galashiels store, running completely on natural refrigerants. End of October, the retailer will open this first of four HFC-free stores, using R744 both for the refrigeration and air conditioning system (see earlier article on R744.com).
Star Refrigeration: The UK's leading refrigeration company received a total of 3 awards: for the best "Training Initiative", as "Environmental Pioneer – Refrigeration" and the "Gold Award" for its achievements in sustainable cooling technology. Star Refrigeration is a leading supplier of CO2 refrigeration systems.
Co-operative Group: The largest consumer co-operative and community food retailer in the UK received the "Green End-user of the Year – Small Projects" award for the first national convenience store to use freezer cabinets with R77. The Manchester store's refrigeration system was installed in collaboration with Epta Refrigeration.
Background
The Cooling Industry Awards were launched in 2004 by the Refrigeration & Air Conditioning (RAC) Magazine to recognize advances in the UK cooling industry. Backed by leading industry players, they reward manufacturers, distributors, and end-users for their latest achievements in environmentally friendly refrigeration and air conditioning. This year's event on 3 October was attended by more than 600 people.
