This is the 4th in a series of articles about the International Congress of Refrigeration in Beijing. Starting from Wednesday, 22 August, R744.com will report live from this key event.
Representing the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Rajendra Shende will chair the first of five plenary sessions at the International Congress of Refrigeration in Beijing, China. The Head of UNEP’s OzonAction Branch will deliver his speech "From Montreal to Kyoto – The Refrigeration Industry's Journey towards Substainability" on Wednesday, 22 August. Shende’s presentation is expected to emphasize the need for an early reduction of environmentally harmful refrigerants, such as HFCs.
His speech comes at a time when the United Nations is intensifying its cooperation with industry bodies to accelerate the drive towards alternative refrigerants, including CO2 (R744).
UNEP and ASHRAE partner on efficient solutions replacing HFCs
|
In June, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and UNEP signed a formal agreement to encourage energy-efficient refrigeration and air conditioning. Besides pushing for a final global phase-out of ozone-depleting CFCs, both organizations emphasized their commitment to new technologies replacing high global warming HFCs: "An international debate has just also triggered about (…) the future of higher global warming HFCs refrigerants. It's quite clear that the HVAC&R industry has and will continue evolving rapidly to respond to such global concerns and movements. Joining hands with ASHRAE (…) will definitely have its positive impact in addressing many clients with latest technologies and updates," Mr Shende said on this occasion.

UNEP's support of R744
UNEP has been active in the promotion of natural refrigerants for several years. Under the initiative "Refrigerants, Naturally!" it supports the uptake of natural fluids, such as CO2, in the drink, food and retail sector. By organizing the "7th European Conference on technological innovations in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry” in June, UNEP called the industry's attention to new refrigerants in stationary applications, with a special focus on R744.
