In a second of a series of articles regarding R744 in commercial refrigeration, R744.com gives you an overview of CO2 solutions for frozen goods storage, ice cream conservation and ice machines.
Leading suppliers such as Sanyo, Embraco, Tecumseh, Star Refrigeration, Liebherr, York Refrigeration, or Sanden have realized the huge potential of CO2-only or combined systems. Their CO2 solutions have sparked interest from global warehouses, frozen food retailers, as well as factories producing and processing fruits, coffee, meat, or ice cream.
Ice Cream Freezers: Nestlé & York Refrigeration
The world's number one food group Nestlé has been investing in CO2 Technology for over ten years. Having installed the world's biggest CO2-Ammonia (NH3) cascade in a Frozen Food plant in Jonesboro, USA, Nestlé joined forces with York Refrigeration to design the first commercial ice cream freezer worldwide. The CO2 freezer has been running successfully in an ice cream factory in Thailand since 2005. Most importantly, its environmental performance is well ahead of what is required by the Montreal Protocol for a developing country. Nestlé now hopes that more companies will manage to leap-frog from ozone-depleting HCFCs directly to R744, thereby avoiding high global warming HFCs.
Cold storage: US Cold Storage plant & M&M Refrigeration

While CO2/NH3 cascade refrigeration systems are already widespread in the EU, only a few installations exist in the USA to date. As one of the first of its kind, the R744 cascade system designed by M&M Refrigeration, an active player in CO2 Technology in the US, cools a warehouse as big as two football fields. Since its installation in May 2005, the $20 million state-of-the-art system has been running highly successfully, leading to the lowest energy consumption among all the company's warehouses.

Food Storage: Asda & Star Refrigeration
Star Refrigeration, the UK's leading refrigeration engineering company, has been active in the promotion of CO2 Technology for several years. Its latest project, a CO2/NH3 for the British supermarket chain Asda, was completed in June 2007. The £3 million refrigeration plant installed in Asda's Lutterworth Central Distribution Centre ensures the efficiency of its frozen food and chilled operations through its highly reliable, robust and energy-efficient operation.
Ice machines: Embraco
The Brazilian compressor supplier Embraco has announced an early commercialization of its R744 compressor family especially suitable for ice cream conservation and ice machines. At a specialized conference in March this year, the company presented test results showing up to 19% energy savings even in hot climates such as Spain or Australia.
