The new ranking system makes it easy to find new cars with the lowest CO2 in their class. Consumers considering buying a new car can search a car by category, transmission and fuel type to find the most environmentally friendly and efficient new vehicles in the market.
|
The website, developed by the British Department of Transport in cooperation with What Car? Magazine, covers 14 vehicle categories, ranging from the supermini to luxury types. German brands top the ranking, offering the lowest emitting vehicles in 8 out the 14 categories. At the other end, American brands feature generally high CO2 emissions values across different categories.
Reaction
"By choosing the car with the most fuel efficient engine in its class, drivers could reduce their engine CO2 emissions by 24 per cent and potentially save a quarter on fuel costs", said British Minister for Transport, Jim Fitzpatrick.
"The message is simple - the car you choose can help reduce your impact on the environment, and help save money", he concluded.

Background
The vehicle rankings system is the latest part of the Department's ACT ON CO2 campaign to help tackle climate change. The rankings were developed using emissions data from the Vehicle Certification Agency, the body responsible for conducting official tests on CO2 emissions. The 14 car categories were developed by What Car? magazine, based partly on groupings used by the motor industry to classify cars and partly on reader research about perceptions of the market.
