French research project focuses on R744 |
 |
Research centres and public authorities have joint forces to help the industry identify and develop hot water heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning solutions based on CO2 (R744). First results are expected for December 2007.

The research programme will support the French refrigeration and heating industry in identifying feasible application fields of CO2 Technology, currently available technical solutions, as well as tools for the future development of products.
The joint initiative of research centres advising the thermal and mechanical industry is supported by the French Environmental Agency (ADEME), as well as regional public authorities. The so-called ODDIRAC project will provide "Tools for the Sustainable Development for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Installations". It was initiated in June to enhance the knowledge transfer among industry leaders interested in efficient R744 solutions for heating and refrigeration applications.

Project phases and content
More specifically, the project addresses:
- CO2 in air conditioning, heating and sanitary hot water heating
- CO2 in commercial and transport refrigeration
- Legal and safety issues

The first project phase will be finalised in December 2007 when the technical platform will be presented to industry representatives at a one day event.
Building on experience from the automotive sector
The on-going project is based on the rising interest in the refrigerant CO2 for mobile cooling applications. Given the current focus on CO2 Technology as an environmentally sustainable solution for car air conditioning systems worldwide, the initiators of ODDIRAC now decided to intensify the research in stationary applications.
Background
The project ODDIRAC (Outil pour le Développement Durable des Installations de Réfrigération de Conditionnement d’Air) is run by CETIAT (Centre des Industries Aérauliques et Thermiques), CETIM (Centre Technique des Industries de la Mécanique), CETHIL (Centre de Thermique de Lyon), GRETh (Groupement pour la Recherche sur les Echangeurs Thermiques), the region of Rhone Alpes, and the French Environmental Agency (ADEME).
