The $2.3 million research and development contract will support Modine's ongoing development of Environmental Control Unit (ECU) and vehicular HVAC systems to provide air conditioning and heating using carbon dioxide (R744) refrigerant for military vehicles and Army tent enclosures. The contract work is scheduled to be completed over a 12-month period.
Throughout the past four years, Modine has been cooperating with the United States Army's Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) to evaluate CO2 Technology in vehicles and living enclosures. The renewed research contract proves that the non-toxic, non-flammable and energy-efficient refrigerant is especially suited to operate under extreme conditions and in harsh climates.

Applying its knowledge from this research cooperation, Modine is moving to supply also the North American commercial sector with CO2-based heating and cooling solutions for large trucks. The company estimates that the new systems combining fuel cell technology with the refrigerant CO2 are 2 to 3 times more efficient than current systems.

"We are pleased that the Army continues to recognize our work in developing heating and cooling systems that are efficient and environmentally responsible," said Samuel J. Collier, Program Manager for Modine's Army Programs.
"The systems we have been working on for the last four years have supported the Army's effort to evaluate new technologies that heat and cool our armed forces, in ways that produce significantly lower amounts of greenhouse gas emissions than those using the current R134a refrigerant."
Background
