Nearly 12 000 visitors explored latest environmental innovations at the German Presidential Palace during the Green Week (Woche der Umwelt). Opening the event, German President Horst Köhler stressed the importance of innovation to face urgent environmental challenges, especially climate change: "We are in front of a new Industrial revolution triggered by climate protection and energy efficiency."
Global challenge
President Köhler also referred specifically to the importance of involving developing nations in global efforts on climate change: "Development policy and environmental protection are directly linked. We need energy-efficient technologies for developing countries."
Calling for the rapid implementation of emissions-saving technologies, he concluded: "The more we wait, the more expensive it will be to implement measures to protect the climate."

CO2 in mobile air conditioning
The leading NGO Deutsche Umwelthilfe presented new initiatives to limit the impact of road transport on air quality and climate protection. In an official press release launched especially for the event, the organisation shows its concern for the fact that Mobile Air Conditioning is "playing an increasingly important role in global warming, as 87% of all new cars registered in Germany feature an air conditioning system."

The NGO therefore recommends the implementation of CO2 as a more "environmentally friendly and energy efficient solution for car air conditioning."
Wolfgang Plehn, from the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA), presented concrete data on car emissions: "Under a conservative estimation, current systems, using HFC134a, add 7 grams per kilometer of (direct) emissions." "More generally," he went on, "overall emissions from fluorinated gases could amount to 5 to 6% of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions in the future." He therefore called for the implementation of "sustainable and long-term solutions," such as CO2 for cooling and heating.
Background
The "Environment Week 2007"(Woche der Umwelt), was held in the park of "Schloss Bellevue", the German Presidential Palace, on 5-6 June. 170 exhibitors were selected from 400 applicants to showcase their innovative environmental developments, products and services. Workshops on a variety of topics, from emissions reduction from road transport, to biodiversity took place during the event.
