This year's first meeting of the carbon dioxide interest group (c-dig), held on 17-18 April in Milan, Italy, explored latest technical developments, maintenance issues, research results, and training needs regarding the natural refrigerant R744 (CO2).
Discussions
Refrigeration industry experts, leading suppliers, representatives of online media as well as scientists not only focused on ways to promote the use of carbon dioxide in various cooling applications, but also on global communication strategies through new training offers and media channels.

The meeting also included a visit to the Lu-Ve factory in Uboldo, a leading developer of heat exchangers in air conditioning who produced a gas cooler for the worlds first transcritical R744 refrigeration system currently installed in a Swiss supermarket.
In detail, participants raised the following issues:
|
|
|
- Air-conditioning for cooling rooms in restaurants with CO2 Alexander Cohr Pachai / York Johnson Controls
- Developments in Australia and Beyond (Moving away from HFCs to natural refrigerants) Michael Bellstedt / Natural Refrigerants Transition Board
- CO2 Experiences in U.S. Supermarkets two Installations, including Wal*mart in Savannah, GA David Hinde / Hill-Phoenix
- Developments in UK Supermarkets Andy Butler / Space Engineering Services
- Transcritical Test Rig (Laboratory testing services for various refrigeration applications & customers) Jorgen Rogstam / Sveriges Energi- & Kylcentrum
- Light-commercial Compressor Development (vending machines, ice cream freezers) Paolo Valero / Embraco
- elearning-training.com (offering online courses for refrigeration technicians) Astrid Prado
- CO2 Training at DTI Lars Reinholdt / Danish Technological Institute
Reactions
"The meeting confirmed that experts worldwide are working on CO2 Technology in industrial and commercial refrigeration and that quick progress has been made," observed Marc Chasserot, Shecco, who presented R744.com as a key platform for CO2 Technology to the audience.
Next steps
The next c-dig meeting will be held 27-29 August in Tokyo, Japan, a week after the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) Congress.
Background
The carbon dioxide interest group (c-dig) promotes the use of CO2 as a refrigerant through exchange of information, technical presentations, peer group benchmarking and research support. At present, it counts 138 members from the academia, manufacturers, contractors, and the media from all around the world.
