UN urges action on transport |
 |
Greenhouse gas emissions from soaring transport activity have to be tackled quickly to avoid major environmental changes, according to a leaked draft report by the United Nations. The paper asks governments to support new emission reduction technologies now.

Unless there are major shifts in policies, the energy use from transport, at 26% of the world's total already now, will continuously grow by 2% a year. In 2030, this will translate to a 80% increase of both energy use and carbon emissions from the 2002 level.
|
This is one key finding from the 101-page technical summary of a draft report, to be issued on 4 May by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The summary also states that fighting global warming can be inexpensive but that governments are running short of time to avoid the worst effects from high-emissive vehicles. The expert panel will propose immediate countermeasures, such as tighter vehicle fuel efficiency standards and lighter materials to double the fuel economy of new vehicles by 2030.

The panel's report "Climate Change 2007: Mitigation of Climate Change" is expected to focus on technology research and policy tools that could limit the impact from man-made greenhouse gas emissions. A more detailed impact assessment will explore the technical and economic sustainability of various mitigation options for the transport sector.
