In September 2006, the California Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32) established a statewide target for greenhouse gas reductions by 2020. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) – the responsible body for adopting concrete measures – will hold several public workshops and conferences during 2007 to ensure a broad stakeholder involvement in the plan's implementation.
|
The first public workshop on 22 January, 2007, invites interested parties to support the development of voluntary and mandatory early greenhouse gas reduction measures. CARB will discuss proposed criteria for selecting such measures, and will present an overall implementation schedule.

From 5 to 7 March, 2007, an "International Symposium on Near-Term Solutions for Climate Change Mitigation in California" will explore options available to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors based primarily on technology solutions that can be implemented in the near term. Participants will discuss new and available technologies, and will focus on voluntary measures, public education, and incentives as possible tools.
Background
The Global Warming Solutions Act aims at a reduction of 74 million metric tons of greenhouse gases by 2020. This will be achieved by a reporting and monitoring system regulated by CARB. By June 30, 2007, the Act requires CARB to identify a list of discrete early action measures for implementation no later than January 1, 2010.
