Dramatic growth of U.S. HFC-134a emissions |
 |
Alone the main refrigerant used in current Mobile Air Conditioning accounted for 66.1 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States in 2005, a new governmental study has found.

The U.S. transport sector issued 50.8 thousand tonnes of HFC-134a, translating into 66.1 million tonnes of greenhouse gases (GHG) in only one year. This is the result of a new report by the Energy Information Administration, issued on 14 November.
|
The results are alarming: the 2005 emissions level is 7% higher than in 2004, and 273% higher than in 1995. The present figure reflects that HFC-134a used in Mobile Air Conditioning now accounts for the largest share of total GHG emissions from hydrofluorocarbons in the U.S.
HFC-134a is classified as a high-global warming impact gas that substantially promotes climate change. It has a Global Warming Impact that is 1.300 times higher than that of CO2 (R744).

Background
Since 1993, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) has been issuing this inventory of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., following a mandate from the Energy Policy Act of 1992. EIA is the independent statistical and analytical agency within the U.S. Department of Energy.
