This is great news. I hope they find these new machines are so good that maybe they could bump that schedule and go nation wide in even less than the 18 months. Perhaps Pepsico could become interested in deploying some of it's test machines here in the driest hottest parts where we thirst greatly in the Phoenix Arizona area.
One part of this article was a bit confusing, though. The 5.08 kilowatt-hours of energy per day should be compared to it's older counterpart so that we may better understand these energy saving and what they could be attributed to.

It is good for all of us that USA finally starts to protect the environment, even on this small scale.
For your info Japan is already manufacturing many thousands vending machines per year using CO2 as the refrigerant (also 5000 unit for the Beijing olympics).
Looking around the world you can find many cases where the protection of the environment is proceeding at very fast rate in using natural refrigerants.
Also from Japan you can get heat pumps and multi split air conditioners using CO2 as the refrigerant and another area developing very fast is using CO2 for shop installations and for large distribution centers both as cascade systems and trans-critical systems, and often as direct expansion systems.

Thank you Jorgen and Jon for the comments below.
FYI we are preparing an article about CO2 Vending machines in Japan, as indeed there are already many thousands in use today.
Regarding the 5.08 kilowatt-hours issue, we are checking with PepsiCo and as soon as we have additional information we will get back to you.

Thanks for the comments, can anyone help me with contacts for such vending machines in Japan and also small bottle dispensers etc similarly with CO2. Coke also made big claims at a conference a few years ago in UK but customers advise me that their CO2 units are not quite so available yet.

The new machines use 5.08 kilowatt-hours of energy per day, which is about 15 percent less than a nationwide average of 6 kilowatt-hours used by current machines.
I hope this is clearer!

I have informations from Japan about the manufactures of CO2 vending machines, the names:
Fuji Electric and Sanden.
They use advanced Sanoy rotery trans-critical CO2 compressors with intercooler or as two stage, and of course with variable speed control. The compressor is a DC compressor with perma magnets and is highly efficient.
In my opinion nobody can match these compressors anywhere in the world for this application.
