I wish to congratulate thermea on their initiative. However, the benefits of using CO2 heating and cooling go a lot further than usually appreciated.

My various case studies have shown that energy savings of 50% are a conservative estimate of potential energy savings in cases where simultaneous heating and cooling are required such as a number of foodprocessing operations and particularly pig and chicken slaughter.

In hospitals larger savings are possible, particularly if attention is paid to the total energy inputs of air circulating and return fans, which are parasitic refrigeration loads and thus require compressor energy to be removed from the circulating air. Therefore, the lower the fan energy consumption the lower the cooling load and the lower the compressor power will be.

This represents an optimisation problem. In generaI terms it will be found, that the total minimum energy input into an AC system is at a lower COP than one would normally select after manipulating the required airflow and duct velocities.

The outstanding advantage of using CO2 for the heating and cooling of office buildings, hospitals etc. is that it may be retrofitted into existing facilities with reductions in energy consumption (both electricity and fuel), corresponding reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, reduced cooling water consumption in cooling towers and at the power stations, and the entire elimination of HFC
fugitive gases and the threat of legionella disease.

IN AMERICAN OFFICE BUILDINGS" by Klaas Visser. It was presented at the 8th IIR Gustav Lorentzen Conference on Natural Working Fluids at Copenhagen, Denmark on 9 September last.
For new buildings the following reductions are predicted

Primary Energy ie calorific value in the energy fuel source 63.5%
Gas concumption 100 %
Electrical Energy 52.4%
CO2 gas emissions 61.8%
Energy cost reduction (electrical energy plus gas) 65.3%
Cooling water at the cooled buildings only 79.1%
I would be pleased to send copies of my paper(s) to anyone interested. The results for hospitals are even better due to the fact that hospitals operate 24/7 365 days per year.
