On 29 October 2014, the new CO2 Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Market store opened its doors in Carol Stream, Illinois. Hillphoenix was the company engaged by the supermarket chain for the entire project, which entailed the installation of a state-of-the-art CO2 transcritical system in its 300,000 ft2 (28,000 m) combined warehouse, commissary and retail store.

Active in the retail market since 1958, Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Market has become a leader in the U.S. food retail not only in offering a wide range of fresh and healthy products but also in being committed to protecting the environment and promoting the use of sustainable technology in its stores.

Angelo Caputo’s “Next Generation Fresh Format” stores cooled by state-of-the-art CO2 transcritical (TC) systems

Angelo Caputo’s first started working with Hillphoenix to equip its Carol Stream facility with a CO2 TC refrigeration system in 2013. The 300,000 ft2 (28,000 m2) facility is comprised of a 100,000ft2 (9,000+ m2) store as well as a warehouse and commissary space. Using CO2 as the refrigerant dramatically reduces costs and the global warming impact of refrigeration leaks compared with conventional HFC systems. Prior to this installation, Hillphoenix had already equipped another Caputo stores with a CO2 cascade system to chill frozen cases.

The large size of the installation, combined with the innovative CO2 TC technology able to provide refrigeration and cooling for several applications (food preparation, warehouse and supermarket), make this system unique in U.S.

The whole project was completed in two stages:

  1. Three racks were installed in the warehouse and commissary space at the end of 2013
  2. One last rack was installed in the retail store in 2014

The supermarket also features several other environmentally friendly technologies, such as:

  • Complete interior and exterior LED lighting
  • Installation of EV charging stations for customers

Higher efficiency and lower costs - key reasons to consider CO2 TC system

CO2 TC systems perform very well in cold climates. According to Hillphoenix, Northern Illinois, where the average annual temperature is 49°F (9.5°C), is a very favourable location for this system. Under these climate conditions, CO2 TC systems can operate 5% to 10% more efficiently than DX systems using HFC refrigerants.

The efficiency of the transcritical system, combined with the low cost of CO2 compared to synthetic refrigerants, is expected to balance the higher upfront cost of this system, which is about 20% to 30% more expensive than the traditional one.
