ATMOsphere America 2014 moved to the West coast this year, organised from the 18 – 19 June in San Francisco, California. Industry experts in the use of CO2 as a refrigerant in commercial and transport refrigeration and heat pumps discussed the current state of play and future trends. Whilst numbers of CO2 cascade and transcritical refrigeration installations continue to rise in both the US and Canada, expected to reach 600,000 globally by 2018, North American CO2

R744.com reporters were in San Francisco to report directly from the largest ATMOsphere America conference to date, during which a wide range of natural refrigerant technologies were showcased. Alongside discussions on latest policy developments in California and the US, and sessions dedicated to leading food retailers and end users Delhaize America, Target, Sobey's Walgreens, Whole Foods, and The Coca Cola Company, contractors were invited to the stage to share their thoughts on how to accelerate the market uptake of CO2. Listed below is the full R744.com coverage of ATMOsphere America 2014.

Target’s big ATMOsphere America 2014 announcement: switch to CO2 refrigeration
With a change of location from Washington DC to San Francisco, 2014 was the largest ever ATMOsphere America conference organised by market development expert shecco. Featuring over 60 presentations, in a surprise announcement during the event’s popular Food Retail Panel, Target, the second largest discount retailer in the US, announced that it would shift to hybrid CO2 systems for new stores.

F-Gas regulatory update from North America, Europe, Japan
One of the sessions of the 2014 ATMOsphere America conference held on 18-19 June 2014 in San Francisco focused on regulatory updates relevant for the wider adoption of natural refrigerant solutions in North America, Europe and Japan. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) brought to attention the possible measures to limit the use of high-GWP refrigerants currently under consideration in the state of California.

Golden gateway to wider CO2 uptake: OEM, end user, and contractor collaboration
For the first time, ATMOsphere America included a session dedicated to contractors and suppliers who shared their unique views on how to accelerate the market for natural working fluids in commercial refrigeration. The key: knowledge sharing and close collaboration with contractors from the project outset.

Expanding market opportunities for CO2 heat pumps in America
A multitude of pathways towards expanding the market for CO2 in heat pumps in America were discussed in a session dedicated to heat pump technology case studies at ATMOsphere America conference on natural refrigerants in San Francisco, 18-19 July 2014: Direct exchange geothermal design, integrated heating and cooling with water source CO2 heat pumps, the design of heat exchangers for heat recovery, as well as progress towards introducing a CO2 heat pump water heater tailored to the needs of the North American market were key topics.

CO2 refrigerated containers for transport commercially available in 2014
ATMOsphere America 2014, held in San Francisco, California from 18-19 June attracted industry experts from around the globe to present and discuss technology trends, best practices and how to accelerate the market uptake of natural refrigerants. CO2 has significant market potential in the transport sector, as presented by Jim Taechens, who discussed Carrier’s CO2 refrigerated container, which has already successfully completed 27,500 operating hours.

During the 3rd edition of ATMOsphere America held in San Francisco, leading North American system suppliers, including Hillphoenix, Carnot Refrigeration, Heatcraft and Mayekawa provided their perspectives on the latest market trends for natural refrigerants, particularly with regards to commercial refrigeration in North America. Advansor and shecco presented the ever-increasing market share of CO2 in supermarkets in Europe and other regions, which include several hundred installations in the US and Canada.
