Soon after PepsiCo announced it was launching a pilot program in US capital Washington DC to test 30 CO2 vending machines, Coca-Cola announced plans to install 4 CO2 beverage coolers at the House of Representatives in the coming weeks as well as up to 1,800 CO2 coolers and vending machines throughout the U.S. and Canada later this year.

The Coca-Cola Company and Coca-Cola Enterprises have announced that they will take a set of innovative measures to demonstrate their leadership in North America in reducing their environmental footprint. These efforts include the installation and testing of up to 1,800 CO
2 climate-friendly beverage coolers and vending machines. The move comes shortly after PepsiCo’s announcement that it was launching a pilot program in Washington DC to test 30 CO
2 vending machines.
The coolers' environmental credentials
The Coca-Cola CO
2 coolers eliminate 99 percent of the direct green house gas (GHG) emissions by means of using natural refrigerant R744, include an intelligent energy management system (EMS-55) that cuts energy use by an average of 26 percent and reduce indirect green house gas emissions by more than three tons over the lifetime of the machine.
CO2 coolers at the US House of Representatives
Among the first locations in the US to test the new climate-friendly, HFC-free, energy-efficient Coca-Cola CO
2 coolers will be the House of Representatives in Washington DC, where four beverage coolers will be installed in the coming weeks.
1,800 CO2 coolers and vending machines to be deployed in North America
Later this year up to 1,800 Coca-Cola coolers and vending machines will be deployed throughout the U.S. and Canada. Most of these coolers are destined for Vancouver, where 1,400 climate-friendly coolers and vending machines will be installed at the venues for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
